Metallica was formed in 1982 in the city of Los Angeles. The original members consisted of James Hetfield on lead guitar and lead vocals, Dave Mustaine on rhythm guitar, Ron McGovney on bass guitar, and Lars Ulrich on drums. Dave Mustaine was then replaced by Kirk Hammet and Ron McGovney was replaced by Cliff Burton. After Cliff's death while on tour in Europe, Jason Newsted became the new bassist for Metallica. Then, in 2001, Jason Newsted left Metallica and in 2002 was replaced by Rob Trujillo.
